Whitby Krampus Run – 5th to 7th December 2025

The Legend and the Local Twist

Emerging as one of Yorkshire’s most intriguing festive traditions, the Whitby Krampus Run offers a vivid celebration steeped in folklore and theatrical flair. Held annually in early December, this unique event brings to life the fearsome figure of Krampus — a horned, goat-like creature from Alpine legend famed for punishing misbehaving children during the Christmas season. Since its inception in 2013, the Whitby Krampus Run has grown dramatically, captivating locals and visitors alike with its blend of European myth and Northern English heritage.

Traditionally, Krampus is depicted as a wild beast with horns, shaggy black fur, and a long, pointed tongue, embodying a dark counterpart to St Nicholas. The Krampuslauf, or “Krampus run”, is a custom still alive across parts of Europe, where youngsters put on frightening costumes to both entertain and scare onlookers. Whitby’s iteration is notable for merging this Alpine folklore with local myth, notably the Whitby Wyrm — a dragon-like creature said to haunt the cliffs near Whitby Abbey. Participants carrying models of the Wyrm weave together tales from different times and places, enriching the event’s narrative and providing a distinctly Yorkshire flavour.

The Event Experience

The Whitby Krampus Run is much more than a parade; it is a weekend-long festival filled with ritual and revelry. The procession begins at the bandstand and winds through Whitby’s ancient, narrow streets, culminating at a central location. Along the route, audiences enjoy performances from drummers, fire-breathers, and street entertainers, all set against the eerie glow of twilight. A particularly evocative moment is the “salt blessing”, where participants are sprinkled with local sea salt, connecting the event to Whitby’s maritime heritage.

Beyond the parade, the weekend boasts workshops—especially mask-making for children—live performances, and a notable “Krampus Ball” featuring music and gothic festivities for adults. While Saturday is the heart of the action, Sunday offers a more subdued atmosphere, with lingering costumed figures and gatherings near the Abbey’s headland to honour the fusion of folklore.

A Celebration of Community and Tradition

What sets the Whitby Krampus Run apart is its strong sense of community and its appeal to a wide audience. Families find kid-friendly activities alongside the thrilling spectacle, folklore enthusiasts revel in the mythic storytelling, and cosplay aficionados appreciate the theatrical costuming. The event provides a captivating alternative to the conventional Christmas market, offering a darker, more dramatic way to celebrate the festive season. It is a vivid reminder of how folklore adapts and thrives, connecting people across cultures and centuries through shared myths and spirited performances.
