Easier said than done, the famous 199 steps are certainly an attraction of their very own that garner attention from all ages and bring out the competitive streak in friends and family who visit Whitby. Leading up Whitby Abbey, you’ll be glad to hear that en route there are benches to ‘ease the pain’ just that little bit, and provide a place of rest for even a few minutes. As you ascend to the top, you’ll be so glad you’ve made the effort as take in the truly spectacular view from the top. PS Don’t forgot to count the steps to make sure there really are 199!

If you are limited for time and new to Whitby, discover our town and its surroundings from the perfect vantage point, aboard the Open Top Bus Tour. Although not located in Whitby itself, this award winning museum is a must visit for anyone with an interest in WW2. Open from April to October only, this award winning attraction has fascinating exhibits, café, shop and even a junior assault course. Allow at least 3 hours for your visit. Approx 27 miles from Whitby. Ticket prices £13 per adult.

Located on the East Cliff headland, this stunning historical site dominates the landscape and is said to have inspired Bram Stoker due to its gothic magnificence. The Abbey has an extraordinary history dating back as far as 675AD. Opening times vary throughout the year and tickets can be booked line from £10 per adult.
