Most well-known tourist towns, resorts and cities boast one iconic monument or statue. Whitby not only has Whitby Abbey but is fortunate to also boast ‘The Whalebone Arch’. Even better news, this incredible structure is only a 2-minute walk from our property, the LilyRose hotel.

Such is its popularity, TripAdvisor ranks the Whalebone Arch number 16 of 47 things to do in Whitby. So, what IS the Whalebone Arch and what is its significance?

Whitby is not only an extremely attractive seaside town associated with Captain Cook, Bram Stoker’s Dracula and its café culture, but historically it was well known for its commercial whaling from the 17th century onwards. This northern Yorkshire port was ideal as a hub for processing and shipping whale products throughout the world. At its peak in the 1800’s Whitby could have as many as 55 ships operating from the harbour.

To mark the importance of Whitby’s maritime heritage, The Whalebone Arch was erected in 1853 on Whitby’s West Cliff close to the Captain Cook monument. The original bones were replaced with a replica in 1963 from Norway, and again in 2003 using bones from a bowhead whale, legal hunted by Alaskan Inuits. How fascinating is that? If you would like to visit the original bones, they are preserved and held at the Whitby Archive Heritage Centre.

It’s worth noting that there is a bit of a climb to the monument, as it’s located at the top of the West Cliff, however the reward is access to amazing views of the harbour and surrounding areas. (Think of all the great Insta moments!)
