28 Jun Whitby is THE Place to Experience the Northern Lights
Sometimes in Whitby, the perfect storm happens when we least expect it. The Northern Lights, also known as ‘Aurora Borealis” is caused by an intense Geomagnetic Storm. Solar activity reacts with the Earth’s magnetic field, the result of which is the most beautiful, stunning, awe-inspiring wash of vibrant colours that paint the night skies. To view the northern lights in the northern hemisphere although infrequent is not unusual, but to see this unfold across the skies of Whitby is quite rare and something to behold.
In May 2024, there was a surge of incredible photos taken by the public in the UK and Ireland as sightings of the Northern lights and Aurora activity were visible for all to see. Social media also lit up as this light show was so powerful and captivating.
It has been reported by some weather experts that this phenomenon is likely to occur more frequently in the coming years as we approach the sun’s maximum solar cycle.
The northern lights were at their strongest in Whitby Bay, North Yorkshire and we can think of nowhere better to be than the LilyRose Hotel, Whitby to try and catch a glimpse of something so incredibly beautiful.
